JOHN MALEY - Director - The Pitching Academy of South Texas

In the first ninety years of St. Mary's University baseball, only eight pitchers went on to professional careers. In the twelve year period between 1992 and 2003, John Maley turned out twenty. Maley was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for the San Antonio school from 1991 until 2003. During those eleven seasons, the Rattlers compiled an impressive 430 wins against only 179 losses, won seven conference championships, four regional championships, had four World Series appearances, ten 30-win seasons and six 40-win seasons. The highlight of Maley's career came in June of 2001 as the Rattlers won the NCAA II National Championship with a record of 50-13.

Widely known for his unique ability to break down opposing hitters, Maley was responsible for pitching staffs that recorded ERA's of 3.43 in 1993, 2.47 in 1996, 2.99 in 2001 and 3.23 in 2002 to lead the conference and finish in the top ten nationally. His hurlers held opponents to batting averages of .220 in 1992, .217 in 1993, .196 in 1995, .215 in 1996, .197 in 2001 and .215 in 2002. In addition, Maley has engineered pitchers to break virtually every Heart of Texas and Heartland Conference pitching record including ERA, Wins and Strikeouts. His pitchers also recorded an amazing nine no-hitters, twenty-two one hitters and 214 complete games.

Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of his career, however, is the fact that in eighteen collegiate seasons, no Maley-trained pitcher has ever suffered a pitching-arm injury.

An 18-year college coaching veteran, Maley continually out-recruited Division I schools to bring outstanding talent to NAIA and NCAA Division II St. Mary's University. He fostered the careers of All-Americans Neil Atkinson, Pete Magre, Jeff Kubenka and Aaron Carter, and developed top-ten round draft picks Michael Zolecki, Carlos Guevara and J.P. Duran. Maley has also watched former pupils Jeff Kubenka and Jeff Sparks make their Major League debuts for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

John Maley began his college coaching career at NAIA/NCAA II Henderson State University in January of 1989 as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. During his two years in Arkansas, Maley witnessed the birth of one of the most successful collegiate pitching systems ever developed. It was here that Maley learned the secrets that enabled Mike Marshall to set Major League endurance records such as most closer relief innings pitched in a season with 208, most appearances in a season with 106 and most consecutive games pitched with 14.

A native of Richeyville, PA, the 45 year old Maley graduated from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas and received his masterss degree from Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He coached three high school seasons before moving to the college ranks.

In 2003-04, Maley was the Head Coach at Laredo Community College in Laredo, Texas.

The 2005, 2006 and 2007 seasons saw Maley as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at NCAA Division I Texas State University. His 2006 staff set the school's all time lowest ERA and finished first in the Southland Conference. His 2007 staff lowered the all time school records set just a year prior and once again topped the Southland Conference. He also helped engineer victories over Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Baylor, TCU, Nebraska, Texas, Texas A&M and Rice Universities. Additionally, six more of Maley's pitchers signed professional contracts during those three seasons.

Maley recently became the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at NCAA II Incarnate Word University in San Antonio, Texas.

He is the proud father of two children: 11 year old daughter Emily and 8 year old son Kash.
